The number of annual flu deaths in the US, going back to at least 2010, is between 12,000 – 61,000. The number of confirmed deaths from COVID is over 210,000 in just 8 months.

Well, the Supreme Court has held that crying "FIRE!" in a crowded theater is not protected speech. It would follow that crying "THERE'S NO FIRE!" in a burning theater is also not protected speech. When the speech is public health advice from a government official, the standard for accuracy should be much higher. This isn't political speech any more.

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control issued new estimates that showed people under 50 years infected by COVID-19 have nearly a 100% survival rate. It broke down to a 99.997% survival rate for 0-19; 99.98% for ages 20-49; 99.5% for 50-69; and 94.6% for those over 70.
Those who died of coronavirus, according to the CDC, had an average of 2.6 comorbidities, meaning more than two chronic diseases along with COVID-19. Overall, the CDC says, just 6% of the people counted as COVID-19 deaths died of COVID-19 alone.

Let's repeat this. The pandemic has killed about 3.5 times the number of people in the US as the last influenza season. No matter how you try to spin and cherry pick, COVID-19 is far more dangerous than a normal flu season.

Killing people who mostly (over 80 percent) were over 75 and were going to die anyway of something else, very soon indeed. But yeah, keep spreading the fear porn. Otherwise, most people might realize they are at far more risk driving to the supermarket than they are from COVID.
Waiting to hear the accounting of all the suicides, poverty, lost homes, divorces, child and spousal abuse, etc, caused by the wild overreaction worldwide. Seems a pretty clean explanation of the 'excess deaths' phenomenon, doesn't it?

If very soon is "within the next 10 years" then you'll find most people have a problem with having their lives be cut short by that amount by something that is avoidable is indeed not acceptable.
These are not people who are already on their death beds.

Indeed. What I can't figure out is why we're so hell-bent on (and proud of) our lack of traffic laws and vehicle safety equipment. I do understand why we don't have mandatory seat belt laws, though: that way lies fascism and the death of American freedom.

A lot of places do have mandatory seat belt laws, but I never saw it as paving the way to fascism. It's when we start micromanaging every little aspect of peoples lives then we invite fascism

The woke movement with it's attempt to outlaw anything that looks even slightly offensive if you squint your eyes hard enough, and going so far as people being driven to write up a brand new "inoffensive" language is way more likely to invite fascism than seatbelt laws.

What do you mean overreaction? The pandemic is still out-of-control with no end in sight. If we had reacted much more strongly, much more quickly, we could have gotten this thing under control and could already be back to mostly normal (thereby reducing all of the other issues you mention as well).

Another option is 'fear'. The other people are specifically 'the other', demographics the speaker does not see themselves as part of, thus making it a 'them' problem and it becomes really important to the speaker to not see themselves the same way.
