Stone Tools Found on Greek Island Date to 300,000 Years Ago

In June 2023, an archaeological find in the Peloponnese rewrote
ancient Greek history in one of the most sensational discoveries
of the decade.

Stone tools dating back to the Lower Palaeolithic period,
estimated to be around 3.3 million to 300,000 years old,
were discovered deep in an open coal mine in the Megalopolis
area.

This find significantly pushed back the timeline of human
presence in Greece, challenging the prevailing understanding
of the region’s early civilizations.

   It is becoming clear that southern Europe was
   crawling with 'humans' - Neanderthals and HSS -
   for a LONG time.

   Unfortunately 'soft' cultural artifacts rarely
   survive hundreds of thousands of years - only
   things made of stone, sometimes bone/antler if
   conditions are especially good.

   Were there (pre?)-ice-age 'civilizations' ? No
   signs yet - but remains would likely be buried
   notably deeper than most archeological digs go.
   HSS alone has been around at least 300,000 years,
   HSN much longer (and yet again ?). PLENTY of
   time for civs of various kinds.

   In any case, gotta keep diggin' !
