   Many pictures of Pompeii may be more guesses
   than facts.

   Noted especially in the article, the presumed
   "woman and child" roasted figures ... turns out
   the 'woman' was not a woman - and the gold
   bracelet worn maybe not exclusive to the ruling
   class. The 'woman' was also from a totally
   different ethnic ... perhaps a slave, or more
   likely a trusted servant.

   The gold ? May have been a personal item.
   May have been a bequest. May have been
   stolen at the last moment for cash value.
   May have been taken as some form of ID for
   the child's family. This we will likely
   never know.

   Pompeii was a "party town" - where anybody
   with a few gold coins came to spend time and
   go wild. The artwork makes all that plain.
   Also, as they say, what happens in Pompeii
   stays in Pompeii ... which means detailed
   records of affairs will continue to be sparse.

   So ... we do as well as we can.

   Of SOME hope, the tech for reading burnt
   scrolls and such has greatly improved so
   we CAN get a bigger picture from those.
