Heck, North Dakota doesn't even have voter registration. They got rid of 
it in 1951.

Why not answer your own question? How was voting 50 years ago 
substantially different from the way we vote today? I imagine you must 
have something specific in mind but, inexplicably, you don't mention it. 
Are you suggesting we bring back the poll tax?

Why just look at elections "50 years ago?" Why not look back even further 
- in the 1800s, for instance? Did people have to show their driver's 
license before voting? Did they have to show a picture ID?

Go back just a little over 100 years and women were not permitted to vote.

The highest voter turnout in presidential election history was 1876. 81.8% 
of those eligible to vote voted. In recent history, the turnout usually 
falls into the 50-60% range, one of the lowest among developed countries 
that have free and fair elections. England typically has a voter turnout 
out in the 70-80% range.

I'm not sure what you're suggesting - go back to the good old days of 
voting?
