In college there was one professor who tried to convince us that pure 
academic research without practical application was the only moral career 
choice, though he ignored that the rest of us would be forced to pay for his 
expensive hobby. If you feel that way then you should be taxed to support my 
scientific hobbies too, without questioning my needs or results. I'd like an 
X-ray fluorescence analyzer and a turbomolecular high vacuum pump, please. 
An atomic absorption spectrophotometer would be nice too.
