ditor's note: In 1970, Gale Sayers wrote "I am Third," an autobiography of =
his football career. Sayers' story of his friendship with teammate Brian Pi=
ccolo drew immediate attention. Their friendship blossomed in 1967 when the=
y became the first integrated roommates on the Chicago Bears. Their friends=
hip grew closer when Sayers fought to return to the NFL from knee surgery, =
while Piccolo faced a more serious opponent -- cancer. Piccolo lost his str=
uggle with cancer in July of 1970. The film "Brian's Song," recounting Saye=
rs' and Piccolo's friendship was released in 1971. ABC will debut a remake =
of the popular TV movie on December 2. Penguin Books has reissued "I am Thi=
rd" and what follows is an excerpt from the new edition. </div><div></div><=

had gone through the same thing. I told him never to lose courage and to re=

ing with charitable organizations, such as orphanages and their local Pregn=
ancy Resource Center, Never Lose Hope Designs continues to make an impact, =
show love, and give hope to people everywhere.</div><div></div><div></div><=
div>"I have never lost hope that this day would come," Lott, 61, said in a =
statement. "I had faith that the truth would prevail, even after 35 long ye=
ars. I can finally shut this door and move on with my life."</div><div></di=
v><div></div><div>Do you ever lie awake at night / Just between the dark an=
d the morning light / Searching for the things you used to know / Looking f=
or the place where the lost things go / Do you ever dream or reminisce / Wo=
ndering where to find what you truly miss / Or maybe all those things that =
you love so / Are waiting in the place where the lost things go</div><div><=
/div><div></div><div>History is full of stories about people who came into =
hard times, lost hope, and gave up. We rarely come to learn what would have=
happened with these individuals if they had given up. We are left to wonde=
r what great successes these people might have achieved if they had chosen =
to hold on to hope. And how might they have gone on to shape our world for =
the better?</div><div></div><div></div><div>On the flip side we find that h=
istory is full of stories of people who also came into hard times, but they=
made a very different set of choices in their lives. Rather than losing ho=
pe and giving up, they chose to pick themselves up, brush themselves off, a=
nd continue moving with the hope toward achieving their dreams.</div><div><=
/div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>None of us=
are immune from falling into difficult times. That plight is something we =
all have in common. Another thing we all have in common is the ability to c=
hoose how we are going to react to the difficult times when they come. Will=
we allow them to destroy our hope for the future or will we decide to view=
them as a learning experience meant to help us as we continue to move forw=
ard with hope that the best is yet to come.</div><div></div><div></div><div=
>A sad reality for those who lose hope and give us is the realization that =
had they kept going just a little farther the success they desired could ha=
ve been theirs. Here are two examples that illustrate that:</div><div></div=
><div></div><div>In a post on Facebook, Crider said: "I never lost hope and=
just wanted him to be safe wherever he was. It's been over two years and I=
got a call that he was found today. My heart is full and I'm so glad he's =
coming home safe. Thank you guys for everything you do this is a wonderful =
community."</div><div></div><div></div><div>I was so out of it I had lost c=
onsciousness, but my body had kept going, down the middle of the road, cars=
whizzing by on either side. I had run out of gas on my way to a drug deale=
r's house, and from there I left the truck and started walking. I had taken=
Klonopin, a prescription antianxiety drug, along with whatever else I was =
using at the time, and the combination had put me over the edge. It's the p=
erfect example of what I was: a dead man walking.</div><div></div><div></di=
v><div>She looks pretty smart, doesn't she? I have a mission now. My missio=
n is to be the ray of hope, the guy who stands out there on that beautiful =
field and owns up to his mistakes and lets people know it's never completel=
y hopeless, no matter how bad it seems at the time. I have a platform and a=
message, and now I go to bed at night, sober and happy, praying I can be a=
 good messenger.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Every day I'm reminded tha=
t my story is bigger than me. It never fails. Every time I go to the ballpa=
rk, I talk to people who are either battling addictions themselves or tryin=
g to help someone else who is. Who talks to me? Just about everybody. I wal=
ked to the plate to lead off an inning in early May, minding my own busines=
s, when the catcher jogged out to the mound to talk to his pitcher. As I wa=
s digging in, the home plate umpire (I'm intentionally not naming him) took=
off his mask and walked around the plate to brush it off. He looked up at =
me and said, "Josh, I'm really pulling for you. I've fought some battles my=
self, and I just want you to know I'm rooting for you."</div><div></div><di=
v></div><div>A father will tell me about his son while I'm signing autograp=
hs. A mother will wait outside the players' parking lot to tell me about he=
r daughter. They know where I've been. They look to me because I'm proof th=
at hope is never lost.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Whether I hit two bo=
mbs or strike out three times, like I did in a game against the Pirates, I =
never forget that I'm living with addiction. It's just part of my life. Joh=
nny Narron, my former manager's brother, is a big part of my recovery. He's=
the Reds' video coordinator, and he once coached me in fall baseball when =
I was 15. He looks after me on the road. When they pass out meal money befo=
re a trip -- always in cash -- they give mine to Johnny, and he parcels it =
out to me when I need it.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Aside from our st=
ruggles as a team, this season has been a dream for me. And that's fitting,=
because in a way I had to learn how to dream all over again. When I was us=
ing, I never dreamed. I'd sleep the dead, dreamless sleep of a stalled brai=
n. When I stopped using, I found my dreams returned. They weren't always go=
od dreams; most of the ones I remember were haunting and dark. They stayed =
with me long after I woke up.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Ironically, C=
avaiani should never have been in Vietnam in the first place. Born in Brita=
in in 1943, he immigrated to the United States in 1947. When American invol=
vement in Vietnam was ramping up in the late 1960s, he discovered that he w=
as considered medically unfit to serve because he was allergic to bee sting=
s. Nonetheless, he was later allowed to enlist, eventually joining the Spec=
ial Forces.</div><div></div><div></div><div>The story of Vivian Fernandes i=
s truly an inspiring one. And the best part about it is that we can all rel=
ate to his story in one way or the other. Today, DIVINE can be referred to =
as the epitome of Indian hip-hop. Through all his challenges and the hardsh=
ips, Vivian Fernandes aka DIVINE never lost hope. We can all learn a lot of=
things from this man.</div><div></div><div></div><div>For most people, whe=
n they think about being married to someone with a disability, only the lim=
itations in the relationship come to mind. I never imagined I would marry t=
wo men with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), but, each time, it was the best d=
ecision I ever made.</div><div></div><div></div><div>One of the guys in a w=
heelchair saw how nervous I was and came to talk with me. His name was Stev=
e and he instantly put me at ease. Only two weeks before I had taken my wed=
ding band and put it on a necklace around my neck. He would never have spok=
en to me if he thought I were married. When I got back home, we connected o=
n Facebook and began messaging each other for a couple of months.</div><div=
></div><div></div><div>Kristen Jane Anderson, 41, tried to kill herself whe=
n she was 17. While her life was spared, she lost both of her legs. She spo=
ke to Jemimah Wright about her story, and why she now lives to bring hope t=
o others</div><div></div><div></div><div>That right there was my portion, i=
have made commitments that i failed to keep though i managed to keep for s=
ome time. old habits and i feel i failed. i disappointed people like you th=
at i had chosen to walk this path with and so much is really going on and a=
m PRACTICALLY LOST. thats Why i tried so much to meet you and talk to you f=
irst as a person i hold with high esteem and respect. but we shall talk whe=
n we meet. hope i will have the words to say.</div><div></div><div></div><d=
iv>Beautiful post, Sarah Jean. Without Jesus we would not have hope and thi=
s dark world would be so lost. Thankfully, His sacrifice gives hope to all =
who will seek Him. That is definitely good news! Thanks for reminding me of=
 this.</div><div></div><div>Blessings to you!</div><div></div><div></div><d=
iv>Renee Plumer said although she was often more out front in public on pro=
jects or charitable initiatives, it was never just me, it was always Renee =
and Danny. We did everything together, we were together all the time."</div=
><div></div><div></div><div>Wearing a broad smile and a Maroon Loyola Law S=
chool T-shirt, Andrew Leander Wilson emerged a free man for the first time =
in 32 years on Thursday, after serving time for a murder he says he never c=
ommitted.</div><div></div><div></div><div>I digress. Hype for Implosion was=
through the roof following that 2013 announcement, and that hype only grew=
as the game was delayed a few different times, missing its intended 2014 r=
elease window and finally arriving on iOS in April of 2015. And boy was the=
wait worth it. Implosion was everything I had hoped it would be and more, =
and it earned an easy 5 star recommendation in our original review. Two goo=
d sized updates followed that initial release. The version 1.1 update arriv=
ed in September of 2015 and added a Boss Rush mode, some new VR side missio=
ns, new enemies, and leaderboard support. Then the version 1.2 update arriv=
ed in February of 2016 and really upped the ante with an entirely new chapt=
er called Last Man Standing" and a brand new playable character named Jonat=
han who piloted a mech that featured dual-wielding firearms and was the ran=
ged attack counterpart to the original and more melee-focused Avalon and Cr=
imson mechs.</div><div></div><div></div><div>THE WITCH CREEK FIRE</div><div=
></div><div>After barely escaping the Cedar Fire in 2003 I never thought my=
family would be so close to a monster wildfire again. I was wrong. Just fo=
ur years later the massive Witch Creek Fire of 2007 swept through San Diego=
County. Over one million people were evacuated, 288,000 acres burned, 2,00=
0 homes were destroyed (including two in my family) and 10 people were kill=
ed. </div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div> 31c5a71286</div>
