It is probably rare for most ordinary people to be confronted by an 
armed assailant. That being said, you can practice self defense tactics 
as a form of spiritual, mental and physical practice.

Having said that, a small can of bear spray can provide enough time for 
a swift kick and/or run away real fast. YMMV.

In Canada, it is unlawful to practice self defense - there's no Castle Law.

A legal rule that says you do not have to run away or hide from a threat 
if you are inside your own home.
