Job 35: What's the logic in Elihu's reasoning?

Elihu challenges Job’s claim that righteousness offers no advantage over 
sin (Job 35:1–16). His core argument unfolds in two parts:

**God’s transcendence makes human conduct irrelevant to Him.** Whether 
Job sins or remains righteous, his actions neither harm nor benefit 
God—human conduct simply cannot affect the Almighty (Job 35:1–16). Human 
behavior impacts other humans, not the divine nature (Job 35:1–16). This 
establishes that God stands infinitely beyond human moral categories.

**People’s prayers go unanswered because of improper motivation.** While 
the oppressed cry out to God, they fail to recognize Him as their 
Creator and source of blessing (Job 35:1–16). God ignores empty 
cries—prayers devoid of genuine faith or proper reverence (Job 35:1–16). 
Elihu concludes that Job multiplies words without understanding, 
speaking from ignorance rather than knowledge (Job 35:1–16).

The theological tension here is significant: Elihu correctly identifies 
that human righteousness cannot obligate God, yet he misdiagnoses Job’s 
actual problem. Job isn’t claiming his virtue should manipulate God—he’s 
protesting undeserved suffering. Elihu’s logic, while theologically 
sound on God’s transcendence, fails to account for God’s covenant 
relationship with His people, where He does respond to the faithful and 
grieves over injustice.
