DEUTERONOMY 8

Remember the Lord Your God

1 (Dt 4:1; 5:32-6:3) You must carefully keep all the commandments 
that I am commanding you today, so that you may live, and multiply, 
and go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers. 
2 (Am 2:10; Ex 15:25) You must remember that the Lord your God led 
you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, 
and to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would 
keep His commandments or not. 
3 (Mt 4:4; Lk 4:4; Ex 16:2-3) He humbled you and let you suffer hunger, 
and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, 
that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone; 
but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. 
4 (Dt 29:5; Ne 9:21) Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did 
your feet swell these forty years. 
5 (2Sa 7:14; Pr 3:12) You must also consider in your heart that, 
as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.
6 (Dt 5:33) Therefore you must keep the commandments of the Lord your God, 
to walk in His ways and to fear Him. 7For the Lord your God is bringing you 
into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs that 
flow out of valleys and hills, 
8 a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, 
a land of olive oil and honey, 
9 a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, in which you 
will not lack anything, a land whose stones are iron, and 
out of whose hills you may dig copper.
10 (Ps 103:2; Dt 6:11-12) When you have eaten and are full, 
then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land 
which He has given you. 
11 Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping 
His commandments, and His judgments, and His statutes, which I am 
commanding you today. 
12 (Pr 30:9; Dt 28:47) Otherwise, when you have eaten 
and are full and have built and occupied good houses, 
13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, 
and your silver and your gold multiply, 
and all that you have multiplies, 
14 (Ps 106:21; Dt 8:11) then your heart will become proud and you will 
forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 
from the house of slavery, 
15 (Nu 20:11; 21:6) who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, 
where there were fiery serpents and scorpions and drought, 
where there was no water, who brought forth for you water 
out of the rock of flint, 
16 (Ex 16:15; Dt 8:3) who fed you in the wilderness with manna, 
which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you 
and that He might prove you, to do good for you in the end. 
17 (Dt 9:4) Otherwise, you may say in your heart, 
"My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth." 
18 (Pr 10:22; Hos 2:8) But you must remember the Lord your God, 
for it is He who gives you the ability to get wealth, 
so that He may establish His covenant which He swore
to your fathers, as it is today.
19 (Dt 4:26) If you ever forget the Lord your God 
and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, 
then I testify against you today that you will surely perish. 
20 (Da 9:11-12) Just like the nations which the Lord will 
destroy before you, so shall you perish because you would 
not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.

[1] All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to
do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the
LORD sware unto your fathers.
[2] And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee
these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to
know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments,
or no.
[3] And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with
manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might
make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
[4] Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these
forty years.
[5] Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his
son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.
[6] Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk
in his ways, and to fear him.
[7] For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of
water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
[8] A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates;
a land of oil olive, and honey;
[9] A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not
lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills
thou mayest dig brass.
[10] When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy
God for the good land which he hath given thee.
[11] Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his
commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this
day:
[12] Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses,
and dwelt therein;
[13] And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold
is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;
[14] Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which
brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
[15] Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were
fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who
brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
[16] Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not,
that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at
thy latter end;
[17] And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath
gotten me this wealth.
[18] But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee
power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto
thy fathers, as it is this day.
[19] And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk
after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you
this day that ye shall surely perish.
[20] As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye
perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your
God. 

DEUTERONOMY 9

Not Because of Righteousness

1 (Dt 4:38; 1:28) Hear, O Israel! You are to cross over the Jordan today, 
to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities 
fortified up to heaven, 
2 (Nu 13:22) a great and tall people, the children of the Anakites, 
whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, 
"Who can stand before the children of Anak?" 
3 (Dt 4:24; Jos 3:11) Understand therefore today that the Lord your God 
is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He shall destroy 
them and shall bring them down before you, so that you drive them out 
and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has spoken to you.
4 (Dt 8:17; 12:31) Do not say in your heart, after the Lord your God 
has driven them out before you, 
"On account of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess 
this land," but it is because of the wickedness of these nations 
the Lord is driving them out before you. 
5 (Titus 3:5; Ge 12:7) It is not because of your righteousness 
or the uprightness of your heart that you enter to possess their land, 
but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God 
drives them out before you, and that He may fulfill the word which 
the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 
6 (Dt 9:13; 10:16) Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God 
is not giving you this good land to possess on account of your 
righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.

[1] Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to
possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced
up to heaven,
[2] A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest,
and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!
[3] Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth
over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall
bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy
them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.
[4] Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast
them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath
brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations
the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.
[5] Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost
thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the
LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform
the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
[6] Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good
land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

The Golden Calf

7 (Ex 14:11; 16:2) Remember, and do not forget how you provoked 
the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that 
you departed out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, 
you have been rebellious against the Lord. 
8 Also in Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord 
was angry enough with you to destroy you. 
9 (Ex 34:28; 24:18; 24:12) When I went up into the mountain to receive 
the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made 
with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights. 
I did not eat bread or drink water. 
10 (Ex 31:18; Dt 10:4) The Lord delivered to me two tablets of stone, 
written with the finger of God, and on them was written all the words 
which the Lord spoke to you at the mountain out of the midst of the fire 
on the day of the assembly.
11 (Dt 9:9) At the end of forty days and forty nights, 
the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 
12 (Ex 32:7-8; Jdg 2:17) Then the Lord said to me, 
"Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought 
out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. They are quickly turned aside 
from the way which I commanded them. They have made a molded image 
for themselves."
13 (Dt 9:6; 10:16) Furthermore the Lord spoke to me, saying, 
"I have seen this people, and indeed, they are a stubborn people. 
14 (Dt 29:20; Ps 9:5) Let Me alone, so that I may destroy them 
and blot out their name from under heaven, 
and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they."
15 (Ex 19:18; Dt 4:11) So I returned and came down from the mount, 
and the mount burned with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant 
were in my two hands. 
16 (Ex 32:19) I looked, and indeed, you had sinned against the Lord 
your God and had made yourselves a molded calf. You had quickly 
turned aside out of the way which the Lord had commanded you. 
17 I took the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands 
and broke them before your eyes.
18 (Ex 34:28; Dt 9:9) I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, 
forty days and forty nights. I did not eat bread or drink water 
because of all your sins which you committed, doing what was wicked 
in the sight of the Lord to provoke Him to anger. 
19 (Dt 10:10; Ex 32:14) For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure 
with which the Lord was wrathful against you to destroy you. 
But the Lord listened to me at that time also. 
20 The Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, 
so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 
21 (Ex 32:20) I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it 
with fire, and crushed it, and ground it very small until it was as small 
as dust. Then I threw the dust into the brook that descended down from 
the mountain.
22 (Ex 17:7; Nu 11:34) Also at Taberah and at Massah 
and at Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath.
23 (Ps 106:24-25) Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadesh Barnea, 
saying, "Go up and possess the land which I have given you," 
then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, 
and you did not believe Him or listen to His voice. 
24 (Dt 31:27) You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day 
I knew you.
25 (Dt 9:18) So I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights; 
I fell down because the Lord had said He would destroy you. 
26 (Ex 32:11-13) I prayed therefore to the Lord, and said, 
"O Lord God, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, 
which You have redeemed through Your greatness, which You have brought 
out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 
27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 
Do not look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness 
or their sin. 
28 (Nu 14:16) Otherwise, the land from which You brought us may say, 
'Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which 
He promised them and because He hated them, He has brought them out 
to slay them in the wilderness.' 
29 (Dt 4:20; Ne 1:10) Yet they are Your people, Your inheritance, 
whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your stretched-out arm."

[7] Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath
in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of
Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the
LORD.

[12] And the LORD said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for
thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted
themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded
them; they have made them a molten image.

down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.
[26] I prayed therefore unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy
people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy
greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
[27] Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the
stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:
[28] Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the LORD was
not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he
hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.
[29] Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest
out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm. 

DEUTERONOMY 10

The Second Pair of Tablets

1 (Ex 34:1-2) At that time the Lord said to me, "Cut out for yourself 
two tablets of stone like the first and come up to Me onto the mountain 
and make an ark of wood for yourself. 
2 I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets 
which you broke, and you shall put them in the ark."
3 (Ex 34:4; 25:5) So I made an ark of acacia wood and cut out two tablets 
of stone just like the first and went up onto the mountain 
with the two tablets in my hand. 
4 (Dt 9:10; Ex 34:28; Dt 18:16) He wrote on the tablets 
just like the first writing, the Ten Commandments which the Lord spoke 
to you at the mountain out of the midst of the fire 
on the day of the assembly, and the Lord gave them to me. 
5 (Ex 34:29; 40:20) I turned around and came down from the mountain 
and put the tablets in the ark which I had made, 
and there they are, just as the Lord commanded me.
6 (Nu 33:38) (The children of Israel set out from Beeroth 
of the sons of Jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, 
and his son Eleazar ministered in the priest's office in his place. 
7 From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, 
a land of rivers of waters. 
8 (Dt 18:5; 21:5) At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi 
to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord 
to minister to Him, and to bless in His name, to this day. 
9 (Dt 18:1-2; Eze 44:28) Therefore, Levi has no portion or inheritance 
with his brothers. The Lord is his inheritance, 
just as the Lord your God promised him.)
10 (Ex 34:28; Dt 9:18-19) As for me, I stayed on the mountain 
like the first time, forty days and forty nights, and the Lord 
listened to me at that time also. The Lord was not willing to destroy you. 
11 (Ex 32:34; 33:1) The Lord said to me, "Arise, take your journey before 
the people, so that they may go in and possess the land which I swore 
to give to their fathers."

[1] At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like
unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of
wood.
[2] And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables
which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark.
[3] And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like
unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine
hand.
[4] And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten
commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of
the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me.
[5] And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in
the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me.
[6] And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the
children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and
Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead.
[7] From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbath,
a land of rivers of waters.
[8] At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of
the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and
to bless in his name, unto this day.
[9] Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD
is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.
[10] And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and
forty nights; and the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also, and the LORD
would not destroy thee.
[11] And the LORD said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people,
that they may go in and possess the land, which I sware unto their fathers
to give unto them.

The Essence of the Law

12 (Dt 6:5; Mic 6:8) Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you,
but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, 
and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 
13 (Dt 6:24) to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which 
I am commanding you today for your good?
14(1Ki 8:27; Ex 19:5) Indeed, heaven and the highest heavens belong 
to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it. 
15 (Dt 4:37) The Lord delighted only in your fathers, to love them; 
and He chose their descendants after them, even you above all people, 
as it is today. 
16 (Dt 9:6; Jer 4:4) Therefore, circumcise your heart, 
and do not be stubborn anymore. 
17 (Jos 22:22; Da 2:47) For the Lord your God is the God of gods 
and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the fearsome God 
who is unbiased and takes no bribe. 
18 (Ps 68:5; 146:9) He executes the judgment of the orphan 
and the widow and loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing. 
19 (Ex 22:21; Lev 19:33-34) Therefore, love the foreigner, 
for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. 
20 (Dt 13:4; 6:13; 11:22) You must fear the Lord your God. 
You must serve Him and cling to Him, and swear by His name. 
21 (Jer 17:14; Ps 106:21-22) He is your praise, and He is your God, 
who has done for you these great and fearsome things which your eyes 
have seen. 
22 (Ge 15:5; 46:27) Your fathers went down into Egypt with seventy people, 
and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.

[12] And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to
fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to
serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
[13] To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command
thee this day for thy good?
[14] Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's thy God, the
earth also, with all that therein is.
[15] Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose
their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
[16] Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more
stiffnecked.
[17] For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a
mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
[18] He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth
the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
[19] Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of
Egypt.
[20] Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him
shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
[21] He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these
great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
[22] Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and
now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

Job 2:7-13

7 Therefore, the Adversary went out from the presence of the Lord, and he
afflicted Job with severe sores from the sole of his foot to the top of his
head. 8 So he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself
while he was sitting among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, "Are you
still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die."
10 He said to her, "You talk like one of the foolish women talks. Will we
indeed accept the good from God but not accept the adversity?" In all this
Job did not sin with his lips.
11 Three friends of Job heard about all this evil that had come upon him,
and each one came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the
Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They had agreed together to come to
mourn with him and to comfort him. 12 They saw him from a distance and did
not recognize him, so they wept aloud. Each one tore his robe, and they
tossed dust into the air above their heads. 13 Then they sat down with him
on the ground seven days and seven nights. Meanwhile, no one was speaking
to him at all because they saw that his pain was severe. (Are these
friends who will really comfort?)

[7] So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with
sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
[8] And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down
among the ashes.
[9] Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity?
curse God, and die.
[10] But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women
speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not
receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
[11] Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon
him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an
appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
[12] And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they
lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and
sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
[13] So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights,
and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

"Daddy, my head hurts." "Daddy, I'm so cold." "Daddy, can you rub my feet?"

A high fever, chills, and body aches recently descended cruelly upon my 
teenage daughter. She wanted me to make it better. But mostly she just 
wanted me near. Eventually we took her to urgent care. "Virus," we were told. 
Nothing to do but ride it out.

I sat with my sick girl for hours that day. Rubbing her feet. Getting her 
medicine. Desperately wanting her to feel better. Occasionally, my selfish 
side complained, This is hard. Indeed, it is hard to sit with people's 
suffering, to witness their hurt up close.

Job's friends saw his suffering up close too. These three guys are 
often - fairly! - criticised for their later poor treatment of Job. But it's 
easy to forget that, initially, they simply sat with him: "They sat on the 
ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, 
because they saw how great his suffering was" (Job 2:13).

Job's friends remind us that when someone we love is hurting, it's our 
presence - our being there, whether we speak or not - that often matters most.
Their example reminds us that even though we may not always know what to say, 
simply sitting with someone in their suffering may be the greatest gift we 
can give.

Who do you know who's struggling? How might you be present for them?

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending 
Jesus to save our suffering world. Please help me to see those whom You might 
have me encourage amid their struggles and pain.

Week 2 - Saved by Grace - Day 6 - It is Finished

John 5:24

24 (Jn 3:18; 1Jn 3:14; Jn 3:36) "Truly, truly I say to you, whoever hears
My word and believes in Him who sent Me has eternal life
and shall not come into condemnation, but has passed from death into life. "

[24] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth
on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into
condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

"PLEASE BE PATIENT - GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH ME YET,"
the sweatshirt read. In this case, the message was an ironic one,
for the occupant of the shirt was a snaggle-toothed, freckle-faced six year
old!
In one sense, God is not finished with the work he has to do in each of us.
Life in Christ is an ongoing process of change and growth as we become
more like him. Certainly, the more we see of ourselves, the more we hope
he isn't finished with us!
Yet whatever plans God has for making us into the men and women he created
us to be, certain aspects of our life in Christ are finished, finalised.
Jesus declares with absolute assurance, "whoever hears
My word and believes in Him who sent Me has eternal life
and shall not come into condemnation, but has passed from death into life. "
Because we do not have to earn or deserve God's grace, because we are not
called to prove ourselves worthy of Salvation, we can have immediate
and total assurance of the security of life in Jesus Christ. The one who
put his trust in the Lord has eternal life; he will not be condemned;
he has crossed over from death to life.
This "crossing over" into life happens in the split second when we acknowledge
our dependence upon Christ alone. And the rest of our lives is given over to
the development of his image in us.
God is not finished with us yet.
But his work of salvation is finished - complete,
fully dependable an accomplished fact.

Application

a) Have I ever doubted the "accomplished fact" of my own salvation? Why?

b) How can today's verse help me realise that, although I may have a lot of
growing yet to do, my salvation in Jesus Christ is secure?

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past
5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have 
focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts
of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres
of worship and an ISlamic madrassah (school) located right next to a 
Christian school.
Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up
in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young
women whowere wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded. 
Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to ISlam.

Agree in prayer with us for:
- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart
and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing
Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.
- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the 
  spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into
  converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation. 
- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more
  to be raised up into effective witness.
- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon 
  to spread and grow to other cities.

Pray for the Pashtuns of Pakistan</a>

Omed is a Pashtun and, many years ago, came to Germany as a refugee.
   He received a Bible in the refugee camp. Friendly Christians cared for
   him. When he almost despaired from loneliness, a friendly employee
   from the government office helped him move into a shared apartment
   with a group of Christians.

   Here, Omed received answers to his questions about faith and accepted
   Jesus as Savior and Lord. The Bible became his joy and comfort in
   increasingly difficult times. He enjoys sharing verses from the Bible
   to encourage others and bring them joy.

   Omed has been living back in his homeland of Pakistan for several
   years now. There, he cannot proclaim his faith loudly. But he lives
   his close relationship with Jesus and inspires friends and relatives
   to reflect. In the village, they respect him as a friendly role model.

   Once, he was beaten for his faith. "Wait!" he said to the person who
   was beating him, "Let me explain what I believe. If you're right, hit
   me. If I'm right, leave me alone." After seeing his boldness, his
   attackers left him alone.

One day, a highly respected Muslim leader asked Omed, "Are you a
Christian?"

   Omed didn't want to deny his faith, but he also knew how dangerous
   such a confession was. So, instead of a direct confrontation, so he
   replied, "Look at the Christians. Do you know any Muslim who lives
   such a good life? No? I'm thinking about it, dear brother! And you
   should too!"

   Omed was grateful that he hadn't denied his Jesus, but he went home
   sad anyhow. He has almost no spiritual fellowship because it would be
   too dangerous for the Christian community and for him. But he remains
   joyfully faithful to Jesus and proclaims him carefully and lovingly.

How to Pray

     * Pray for the more than 50 million Pashtuns worldwide, among whom
       there are few followers of Jesus.
     * Pray for wisdom, courage, and God's protection for believers like
       Omed.
     * Ask God for many joyful communities of Jesus followers to emerge
       from amongst the Pashtun.

My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, ...) .

A few years ago, I heard a friend tell the story of Pepito, a little parakeet.
One day, while his owner was cleaning the cage with a vacuum, she went to 
answer the phone and left the machine running. As a result, Pepito was 
accidentally sucked in. Although he survived, his owner unknowingly exposed 
him to more stress by bathing him in cold water and then trying to "revive" 
him with hot air. My friend concluded that, from that day on, Pepito never 
sang the same way again.

This story reminds us that painful experiences from the past can sometimes 
affect our present and future. Many of us have faced loss, illness, betrayal, 
or difficult circumstances that seem to leave a permanent mark on our lives. 
However, as Christians, we have a different hope: our past does not have to 
define us or limit what God wants to do in us.

The Apostle Paul teaches us in Philippians 3:13-14: "forgetting those things 
which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in
Christ Jesus. "

Today, God invites us to leave behind pain, to forgive, to heal, and to look 
forward with faith. Even if our wounds have been deep, we can trust that He 
has a purpose for each of us. Just as Paul pressed on toward the goal without 
getting stuck in the past, we too can live with joy, hope, and a renewed 
heart, free in Jesus Christ.
