Conflict in the Church - Why can't we get along?

A) The Dissension

Acts 15:1-5

The Council in Jerusalem

1 (Ac 15:5; 15:24) Some men came down from Judea and were teaching
the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised in the tradition of Moses,
you cannot be saved."
2 (Ac 15:22-23; 15:4; 15:6-7) Therefore when Paul and Barnabas had
no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul
and Barnabas, and certain others among them, should go up to Jerusalem
to the apostles and elders about this question.
3 (Ac 14:27; 21:5) So being sent on their way by the church,
they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion
of the Gentiles, and they brought great joy to all the brothers.
4 (Ac 14:27; 15:12) When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed
by the church and the apostles and the elders,
and they declared what God had done through them.
5 (Ac 15:1) Then some believers of the sect of the Pharisees rose up, saying,
"It is necessary to circumcise them,
and to command them to keep the Law of Moses." 

[1] And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and
said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be
saved.
[2] When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation
with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of
them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this
question.
[3] And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through
Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they
caused great joy unto all the brethren.
[4] And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church,
and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had
done with them.
[5] But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed,
saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep
the law of Moses. 

Galatians 2:11-14

Paul Rebukes Peter in Antioch

11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him face to face,
because he stood condemned.
12 (Lk 15:2; Ac 10:28) Before certain men came from James,
he ate with the Gentiles. But when they came, he withdrew
and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
13 And the other Jews, likewise, joined together in hypocrisy with him,
so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.
14 (Gal 2:5; Ac 10:28) But when I saw that they were not straightforward
about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all,
"If you, being a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew,
why do you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?"
Some interpreters hold that the quotation extends
into the following paragraph.

[11] But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face,
because he was to be blamed.
[12] For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles:
but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them
which were of the circumcision.
[13] And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas
also was carried away with their dissimulation.
[14] But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of
the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest
after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou
the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? 

B) The Discussion

Acts 15:6-18

6 (Ac 15:25) The apostles and elders assembled to consider this matter.
7 (Ac 15:2; 10:20) After much disputing, Peter rose up and said to them,
"Brothers, you know that some time ago God decided among us,
that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.
8 (Ac 1:24; 2:4) God, who knows the heart, approved of them, giving them
the Holy Spirit just as He did to us,
9 (Ac 10:28; 10:34) and made no distinction between them and us,
and purified their hearts by faith.
10 (Mt 23:4; Gal 5:1) Now then, why test God by putting a yoke upon
the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been
able to bear?
11 (Ro 3:24; 2Co 13:14) But we believe that through the grace
of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they."
12 (Ac 14:27; 15:4) The entire assembly remained silent
and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring what signs
and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.
13 (Ac 12:17) After they had become silent, James answered,
"Brothers, listen to me.
14 (Isa 43:21; 2Pe 1:1) Simon has declared how God first visited
the Gentiles to take from among them a people for His name.
15 With this the words of the prophets agree. As it is written:
16 (Am 9:11-12) 'After this I will return,
and I will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen;
I will rebuild its ruins,
and I will set it up;(Am 9:11; Jer 12:15.)
17 (Isa 43:7) that the rest of men may seek the Lord,
and all the Gentiles who are called by My name,
(Am 9:12; Dt 28:10; Isa 63:19; Jer 14:9; Da 9:19.)
says the Lord who does all these things.' (Am 9:11-12.)
18 Known to God are all His works since the beginning of the world. 

[6] And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this
matter.
[7] And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto
them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice
among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel,
and believe.
[8] And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the
Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
[9] And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by
faith.
[10] Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the
disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
[11] But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall
be saved, even as they.
[12] Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and
Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles
by them.
[13] And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and
brethren, hearken unto me:
[14] Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to
take out of them a people for his name.
[15] And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
[16] After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David,
which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will
set it up:
[17] That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the
Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these
things.
[18] Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. 

Acts 15:2

Acts 15:12

12 (Ac 14:27; 15:4) The entire assembly remained silent
and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring what signs
and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

[12] Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and
Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles
by them.

Ephesians 4:14-15

14 (Jas 1:6; 1Co 14:20) so we may no longer be children, tossed here
and there by waves and carried about with every wind of doctrine
by the trickery of men, by craftiness with deceitful scheming.
15 (Eph 1:22; 2:21) But, speaking the truth in love, we may grow up
in all things into Him, who is the head, Christ Himself,

[14] That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried
about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning
craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
[15] But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things,
which is the head, even Christ: 

C) The Decision

Acts 15:19-35

19 (Ac 15:28) "Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble
those of the Gentiles who are turning to God,
20 (Lev 3:17; Ac 15:29; Ge 9:4) but that we write to them to abstain
from food offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from strangled animals,
and from blood.
21 (Ac 13:15; 13:27) For Moses has had in every city since early generations
those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath." 


[19] Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among
the Gentiles are turned to God:
[20] But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of
idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
[21] For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being
read in the synagogues every sabbath day. 

The Reply of the Council

22 (Ac 15:27; 15:32; 15:40) Then it pleased the apostles and the elders,
with the whole church, to send chosen men from among them to Antioch
with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas called Bar­sabas, and Silas,
leading men among the brothers.
23 (Ac 23:26; Jas 1:1) They wrote this letter by their hand:
The apostles and the elders and the brothers,
To the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:
Greetings.
24 (Ac 15:1; Gal 1:7) Since we have heard that some of us,
whom we did not commission, have gone out and have troubled you with words,
unsettling your minds, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law,"
25 (Ac 1:14; 2Pe 3:15) it seemed good to us, being assembled in unity,
to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 (Ac 14:19; 9:23-25) men who have risked their lives
for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 (Ac 15:22) Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas,
who will also speak to you, saying the same things.
28 (Jn 16:13; Ac 5:32) For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit
and to us to put on you no greater burden than these necessary things:
29 (Ac 15:20; 21:25; Rev 2:14) Abstain from food offered to idols,
from sexual immorality, from strangled animals, and from blood.
If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
Farewell.
30 So when they were dismissed, they went down to Antioch.
And when they had assembled the congregation, they delivered the letter.
31 When they had read it, they rejoiced over the exhortation.
32 (Ac 11:23; 13:1) Judas and Silas, being prophets themselves,
exhorted the brothers with many words and strengthened them.
33 (1Co 16:11; Ac 16:36) After they had remained there for a time,
they were sent off in peace by the brothers to the apostles.
34 But it seemed good to Silas to remain there.
35 (Ac 13:1) And Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch,
teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

[22] Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send
chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely,
Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
[23] And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and
elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the
Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:
[24] Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have
troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be
circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
[25] It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen
men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
[26] Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ.
[27] We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the
same things by mouth.
[28] For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no
greater burden than these necessary things;
[29] That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from
things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye
shall do well. Fare ye well.
[30] So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had
gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:
[31] Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.
[32] And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the
brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
[33] And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace
from the brethren unto the apostles.
[34] Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.
[35] Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the
word of the Lord, with many others also. 

Ephesians 2:8-9

8 (Eph 2:5; Mk 16:16) For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God,
9 (2Ti 1:9; Ro 3:20) not of works, so that no one should boast.

[8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it
is the gift of God:
[9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. 

1 Corinthians 9:19-21

19 (Mt 18:15; 1Co 9:1) For though I am free from all men, I have made myself
servant to all, that I might win even more.
20 (Ac 16:3; 21:20-26) To the Jews, I became as a Jew, that I might win
the Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might
win those who are under the law;
21 (Ro 2:12; 2:14) to those who are outside the law, as outside the law
(being not without God's law, but under Christ's law) that I might win
those who are outside the law.

[19] For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto
all, that I might gain the more.
[20] And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to
them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that
are under the law;
[21] To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to
God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without
law. 

Further Study

Amos 9:11-12

11 (Ps 80:12; Isa 16:5) On that day will I raise up
the hut of David that is fallen;
I will close up its breached walls,
raise up its ruins,
and rebuild it as in the days of old;
12 (Isa 43:7; 11:14) that they may possess the remnant of Edom,
and of all the nations called by My name,
says the Lord who will do this.

[11] In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen,
and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will
build it as in the days of old:
[12] That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen,
which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. 

Galatians 2:1-10

Paul Accepted by the Other Apostles

1 (Gal 2:3; 2:13) Then after fourteen years I went up again
to Jerusalem with Barnabas and also took Titus with me.
2 (Gal 2:9; Php 2:16) I went up in response to a revelation
and communicated to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles.
But privately I communicated to those who were of reputation,
in case I might be running, or had run, in vain.
3 (Ac 16:3) But even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek,
was not compelled to be circumcised.
4 (2Co 11:26; Gal 5:1) This happened because false brothers
were secretly brought in, who sneaked in to spy out our liberty,
which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage.
5 (Gal 2:14; 4:16) We did not yield to subjection to them,
not for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
6 (2Co 12:11; Gal 6:3; Ac 10:34) But of these who seemed to be something-
whatever they were, it makes no difference to me;
God shows no partiality to anyone-for those who seemed
to be something added nothing to me.
7 (1Th 2:4; Gal 1:16) On the contrary, they saw that I was entrusted
with the gospel to the uncircumcised, as the gospel to the circumcised
was to Peter.
8 For He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship
to the circumcised worked effectively in me toward the Gentiles.
9 (Ro 12:3; Rev 3:12) When James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars,
understood the grace that was given to me, they gave to Barnabas and me
the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles
and they to the circumcised.
10 (Ac 24:17) Only they requested that we should remember the poor,
which I also was eager to do.

[1] Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas,
and took Titus with me also.

somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
[7] But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision
was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;
[8] (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the
circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)
[9] And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived
the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right
hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the
circumcision.
[10] Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also
was forward to do.

Jeremiah 4
Judah Threatened With Invasion
1 (Joel 2:12; Jer 3:22) If you will return, O Israel,
says the Lord,
return to Me.
And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight,
then you shall not be moved.
2 (Isa 65:16; Jer 9:24; Ge 22:18) You shall swear, "As the Lord lives,"
in truth, in justice, and in righteousness;
then the nations shall bless themselves in Him,
and in Him they shall glory.
3 (Hos 10:12; Mt 13:7) For thus says the Lord to
the men of Judah and Jerusalem:
Break up your fallow ground,
and do not sow among thorns.
4 (Dt 10:16; Jer 9:26) Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
and take away the foreskins of your heart,
you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
lest My fury come forth like fire,
and burn so that no one can quench it,
because of the evil of your deeds.
5 (Jer 8:14; Jos 10:20) Declare in Judah and publish in Jerusalem, and say:
Blow the trumpet in the land.
Cry aloud and say,
"Assemble yourselves,
and let us go into the fortified cities."
6 (Jer 1:13-15; 50:2 ) Set up the standard toward Zion.
Seek refuge, do not delay.
For I will bring disaster from the north,
and a great destruction.
7 (Jer 2:15; Isa 1:7) The lion has come up from his thicket,
and the destroyer of the nations is on his way.
He has gone forth from his place
to make your land desolate.
And your cities shall be laid waste
without an inhabitant.
8 (Isa 22:12; Jer 6:26) For this gird yourself with sackcloth,
lament and howl.
For the fierce anger of the Lord
is not turned back from us.
9 (Isa 22:3-5; 29:9-10) It shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord,
that the heart of the king will fail and the heart of the officials;
and the priests will be astonished
and the prophets will wonder.
10 (Jer 5:12) Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! Surely You have greatly deceived
this people and Jerusalem, saying, 'You shall have peace,'
whereas the sword reaches the throat."
11 (Eze 17:10; Hos 13:15) At that time it will be said to this people
and to Jerusalem: A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness
toward the daughter of My people, not to fan or to cleanse,
12 (Jer 1:16) even a full wind from those places, will come to Me.
Now also I will pronounce judgments against them.
13 (Isa 5:28; 19:1) Look! He shall come up as clouds,
and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind.
His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are ruined!
14 (Jas 4:8; Pr 1:22) O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness,
that you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
15 (Jer 8:16) For a voice declares from Dan,
and publishes wickedness from Mount Ephraim:
16 (Jer 5:15; Eze 21:22) "Report it to the nations, now!"
Indeed, proclaim against Jerusalem:
"Besiegers come from a far country,
and lift their voices against the cities of Judah.
17 (Jer 5:23; 2Ki 25:1-4) As watchmen of a field,
they are against her all around,
because she has been rebellious against Me,
says the Lord.
18 (Jer 2:19; Ps 107:17; Isa 50:1) Your way and your deeds
have procured these things to you.
This is your wickedness.
How bitter it is!
How it touches your heart!"
Sorrow for a Doomed Nation
19 (Isa 16:11; 22:4) My soul, my soul!
I am pained at my very heart.
My heart makes a noise in me.
I cannot hold my peace,
because you have heard, O my soul,
the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
20 (Ps 42:7) Destruction upon destruction is proclaimed,
for the whole land is devastated.
Suddenly are my tents devastated,
and my curtains in a moment.
21 How long shall I see the standard
and hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 (Ro 16:19; 1Co 14:20) "For My people are foolish,
they have not known Me.
They are foolish children,
and they have no understanding.
They are wise to do evil,
but to do good they have no knowledge."
23 (Ge 1:2; Isa 5:30) I looked on the earth,
and it was without form and void.
And to the heavens,
and they had no light.
24 (Isa 5:25; Eze 38:20 ) I looked on the mountains,
and they trembled,
and all the hills moved to and fro.
25 I looked, and there was no man,
and all the birds of the heavens had fled.
26 (Ps 107:34) I looked, and the fruitful place was a wilderness,
and all the cities were broken down
at the presence of the Lord, and by His fierce anger.
27 (Jer 5:10; 5:18) For thus says the Lord:
The whole land shall be desolate.
Yet I will not make a full end.
28 (Nu 23:19; Isa 50:3) For this the earth shall mourn,
and the heavens above be black,
because I have spoken it, I have purposedit,
and will not relent, nor will I turn back from it.
29 (Isa 2:19-21; Jer 4:7) The whole city shall flee
for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen.
They shall go into thickets
and climb up upon the rocks.
Every city shall be forsaken,
and not a man dwell in it.
30 (2Ki 9:30; La 1:2) When you are devastated, what will you do?
Though you clothe yourself with crimson,
though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold,
though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
in vain you will make yourself fair.
Your lovers will despise you;
they will seek your life.
31 (Isa 1:15; La 1:17) For I have heard a voice as of a woman in labor,
and the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child,
the voice of the daughter of Zion,
that bewails herself, that spreads her hands, saying,
"Ah, woe is me,
for my soul is wearied because of murderers."

Jeremiah 4
[1] If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if
thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not
remove.
[2] And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in
righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him
shall they glory.
[3] For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your
fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
[4] Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your
heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth
like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your
doings.
[5] Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the
trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves,
and let us go into the defenced cities.
[6] Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil
from the north, and a great destruction.
[7] The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles
is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate;
and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.

give sentence against them.

thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
[19] My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a
noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the
sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
[20] Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled:
suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
[21] How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
[22] For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish
children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to
do good they have no knowledge.
[23] I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the
heavens, and they had no light.
[24] I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved
lightly.
[25] I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens
were fled.
[26] I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the
cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his
fierce anger.
[27] For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will
I not make a full end.
[28] For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because
I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I
turn back from it.
[29] The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen;
they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall
be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
[30] And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest
thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold,
though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself
fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
[31] For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as
of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of
Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me
now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.

Jeremiah 5

The Justice of God's Judgment

1 (2Ch 16:9; Eze 22:30) Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,
see now and know;
seek in the open places
if you can find a man,
if there is any who executes justice, who seeks the truth,
that I may pardon her.
2 (Titus 1:16; Isa 48:1) Though they say, "The Lord lives,"
surely they swear falsely.
3 (Jer 2:30; 2Ch 16:9) O Lord, are not Your eyes upon the truth?
You have stricken them, but they have not grieved.
You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction.
They have made their faces harder than a rock;
they have refused to return.
4 (Jer 8:7; Isa 27:11) Therefore I said, "Surely these are the poor.
They are foolish;
for they know not the way of the Lord
or the judgment of their God.
5 (Jer 2:20) I will go to the great men
and will speak to them,
for they have known the way of the Lord
and the judgment of their God."
But these have altogether broken the yoke
and burst the bonds.
6 (Jer 4:7; Hab 1:8) Therefore a lion out of the forest will slay them,
and a wolf from the deserts will destroy them;
a leopard will watch over their cities.
Everyone who goes out from there will be torn in pieces,
because their transgressions are many
and their backslidings have increased.
7 (Dt 32:21; Jos 23:7) How shall I pardon you for this?
Your children have forsaken Me
and sworn by those who are not gods.
When I had fed them to the full,
then they committed adultery
and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
8 (Jer 13:27; Eze 22:11) They were as fed horses in the morning;
everyone neighed after his neighbour's wife.
9 (Jer 9:9; 5:29) Shall I not punish for these things? says the Lord,
and shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 (Jer 4:27; 39:8) Go up upon her walls and destroy,
but make not a full end.
Take away her battlements.
For they are not the Lord’s.
11 (Jer 3:20) For the house of Israel and the house of Judah
have dealt very treacherously againstMe,
says the Lord.
12 (2Ch 36:16; Jer 43:2-3) They have lied about the Lord,
and said, "Not He.
Neither shall evil come upon us,
nor shall we see sword or famine."
13 (Jer 14:15; Job 8:2) And the prophets shall become wind,
and the word is not in them.
Thus it shall be done to them!
14 (Jer 1:9; 23:29) Therefore thus says the Lord God of Hosts:
Because you speak this word,
indeed I will make My words in your mouth fire
and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 (Dt 28:49; Isa 5:26) Truly, I will bring a nation upon you from far,
O house of Israel, says the Lord.
It is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation,
a nation whose language you do not know,
nor do you understand what they say.
16 (Ps 5:9; Isa 5:28) Their quiver is as an open sepulcher,
they all are mighty men.
17 (Lev 26:16; Dt 28:33) They will eat up your harvest and your bread
which your sons and your daughters should eat.
They will eat up your flocks and your herds;
they will eat up your vines and your fig trees;
they will impoverish your fenced cities,
in which you trusted, with the sword.
18 (Jer 4:27; 5:10) Nevertheless in those days, says the Lord,
I will not make a full end of you.
19 (1Ki 9:8-9; Jer 13:22) It shall come to pass when they say,
"Why does the Lord our God do all these things to us?"
then you shall answer them, "As you have forsaken Me
and served strange gods in your land, so you will serve
strangers in a land that is not yours."

our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye
have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve
strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and publish it in Judah, saying:
21 (Isa 6:9-10; Eze 12:2) Hear this now, O foolish people
and without understanding, who have eyes but do not see,
who have ears but do not hear.
22 (Ps 119:120; Dt 28:58) Do you not fear Me? says the Lord.
Will you not tremble at My presence?
For I have placed the sand for the boundary of the sea
by a perpetual decree so that it cannot pass over it.
And though the waves toss themselves, yet they cannot prevail;
though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.
23 (Jer 6:28) But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart;
they have revolted and gone aside.
24 (Ge 8:22; Ps 147:8) They do not say in their heart,
"Let us now fear the Lord our God,
who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season.
He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest."
25 (Jer 3:3) Your iniquities have turned away these things,
and your sins have withheld good things from you.
26 (Pr 1:11; Jer 18:22) For among My people are found wicked men.
They lie in wait, as he who sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit.
Therefore they have become great and rich.
28 (Dt 32:15; Isa 1:23) They are fat, they are sleek.
Indeed, they excel in deeds of wickedness.
They do not judge the cause of the fatherless,
so that they may prosper;
and the right of the needy they do not defend.
29 (Jer 5:9; Mal 3:50) Shall I not punish them for these things?
says the Lord. Shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 (Jer 23:14; Hos 6:10) An appalling and horrible thing
has been committed in the land.
31 (Eze 13:6; Mic 2:11) The prophets prophesy falsely,
and the priests rule by their own authority;
and My people love to have it so.
Yet what will you do in the end?

means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end
thereof?

Jeremiah 6

Siege of Jerusalem

1 (Ne 3:14; Jdg 1:21) O sons of Benjamin, gather yourselves
to flee from the midst of Jerusalem,
and blow the trumpet in Tekoa,
and set up a sign of fire in Beth Hakkerem;
for disaster appears out of the north,
and great destruction.
2 (Isa 1:8; Jer 4:31) I have likened the daughter of Zion
to a comely and delicate woman.
3 (Lk 19:43) The shepherds with their flocks will come to her.
They will pitch their tents against her all around.
They will pasture each in his place.
4 (Jer 15:8; Joel 3:9) "Prepare war against her;
arise, and let us go up at noon."
"Woe to us, for the day declines,
for the shadows of the evening are stretched out."
5Isa 32:14; Jer 52:13 "Arise, and let us go by night
and let us destroy her palaces."
6 For thus says the Lord of Hosts:
Hew down trees
and build a mound against Jerusalem.
This is the city to be punished.
She is full of oppression in her midst.
7 (Eze 7:11; 7:23) As a fountain casts out her waters,
so she casts out her wickedness.
Violence and devastation are heard in her;
before Me continually are grief and wounds.
8 (Eze 23:18; Hos 9:12) Be instructed, O Jerusalem,
lest My soul depart from you;
lest I make you desolate,
a land not inhabited.
9 (Jer 16:16; 49:9) Thus says the Lord of Hosts:
They will thoroughly glean
the remnant of Israel as a vine.
Turn back your hand
as a grape gatherer into the baskets.
10 (Ac 7:51; Jer 7:26) To whom shall I speak and give warning
that they may hear?
See, their ears are closed,
and they cannot listen.
Indeed, the word of the Lord is a reproach to them;
they have no delight in it.
11 (Jer 9:21; 20:9) Therefore I am full of the fury of the Lord;
I am weary with holding in.
I will pour it out upon the children in the street
and upon the assembly of young men together;
for even the husband with the wife shall be taken,
the aged with him who is full of days.
12 (Jer 8:10; Isa 5:25) Their houses shall be turned to others,
with their fields and wives together;
for I will stretch out My hand
upon the inhabitants of the land,
says the Lord.
13 (Jer 8:10; 23:11) For from the least of them even to the greatest of them,
everyone is given to covetousness.
And from the prophet even to the priest,
everyone deals falsely.
14 (Eze 13:10; Jer 4:10) They have healed also the brokenness
of the daughter of My people superficially,
saying, "Peace, peace," when there is no peace.
15 (Jer 3:3; 8:12) Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
They were not at all ashamed, nor could they blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
at the time that I punish them they shall be cast down,
says the Lord.
16 (Jer 18:15; Isa 8:20) Thus says the Lord
Stand in the ways and see,
and ask for the old paths
where the good way is and walk in it,
and you shall find rest for your souls.
But they said, "We will not walk in it."
17 (Isa 21:11; 58:1) Also I set watchmen over you, saying,
"Listen to the sound of the trumpet."
But they said, "We will not listen."
18 Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them.
19 (Jer 8:9; Isa 1:2) Hear, O earth.
I will bring calamity on this people,
even the fruit of their thoughts,
because they have not listened to My words,
nor to My law, but rejected it.
20 (Isa 1:11; Ps 40:6; Isa 60:6 ) To what purpose does incense
from Sheba come to Me, and the sweet cane from a far country?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices sweet to Me.
21 (Isa 8:14; 9:14-17) Therefore thus says the Lord:
See, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people,
and the fathers and the sons together will fall upon them.
The neighbor and his friend will perish.
22 (Jer 10:22; 50:41-43) Thus says the Lord: See, a people comes
from the north country, and a great nation will be raised
from the remote parts of the earth.
23 (Isa 13:18; Jer 50:42) They will lay hold on bow and spear;
they are cruel and have no mercy.
Their voice roars like the sea,
and they ride upon horses,
set in array as men for war
against you, O daughter of Zion.
24 (Jer 4:31; 49:24) "We have heard the report of it;
our hands grow feeble.
Anguish has taken hold of us, and pain as of a woman in labour.
25 (Jer 49:29; Job 18:11) Do not go out into the field, nor walk on the road.
For the sword of the enemy and terror is on every side."
26 (Jer 4:8; Zec 12:10) O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth
and wallow in ashes.
Mourn as for an only son,
a most bitter lamentation;
for the destroyer
shall suddenly come upon us.
27 (Jer 1:18; 15:20) I have set you as an assayer
and fortress among My people
that you may know
and try their way.
28 (Jer 9:4; 5:23) They all are stubborn rebels
walking about practicing slander.
They are bronze and iron;
they all are corrupters.
29 The bellows blow fiercely,
the lead is consumed by the fire;
the founder melts in vain,
for the wicked are not plucked away.
30 (Ps 119:119; Isa 1:22) Men will call them rejected silver,
because the Lord has rejected them.

[26] O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself
in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation:
for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.
[27] I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou
mayest know and try their way.
[28] They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are brass
and iron; they are all corrupters.
[29] The bellows are burned, the lead is consumed of the fire; the founder
melteth in vain: for the wicked are not plucked away.
[30] Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected
them.
