No, no it's not true. Read the licence. It about restrictions to freedom 
by imposing obligations which if complied with allow some limited

Let me make it simple for you, if you grow carrots on your allotment and 
you have some spare ones you can either sell them or give them away. A 
permissive licence gives them away to anybody, sure it may have a 
disclaimer like if you stick them up your arse don't send the medical 
bills to us just stick those up your arse as well but for everyone but 
Scaly Ron, we just boil em. No loss of sleep about obligations or making 
carrot soup for sale which is fine under the GPL except that you have to 
publish your mamas secret recipe which blows away the competition and is 
the USP of the century in carrot soup production. So, who wins. The 
consumer loses because the carrot soup costs more because the business 
cannot publish your mamas secret recipe because if they do they won't 
have a business.

Do you get it now. It's the people's code. Linux and GNU was started by 
the little people. They don't always benefit. A bigger soup making 
business will just employ a lawyer to work around the licence take all 
the carrots, and the little man ends up working for the man. The soup 
will likely taste worse as well.

I hope my carrot analogy has been helpful. Disclaimer: Just to be clear, 
don't stick carrots or medical bills up your arse kiddies. The cats in
