Indeed.

Otoh, the always-on mini PC would use up all the RAM and the
swap and then go nuts trying to clean it up.

Finally traced it to picom (compositor). It's got major memory
leaks. Restarting it would clean out gigabtyes worth.

I got tired of doing it manually (or forgetting to do it), so made
a cron job that runs at 2 AM.

Why do I put up with picom? I find it helpful in my workflow.
