Computer Won't Bootup

My step-son's computer is having an interesting problem. He is running XP
pro. Whenever he turns on his unit it gets to the windows logo and then
turns off and reboots. It will get the this same place and the screen will
read something about not being able to continue. It recommends several
different avenue to continue including safe mode. When he tries safe mode
he get a bunch of numbers on the screen and ten or so seconds later the
computer shuts off.
Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this problem? Your quick help in
this matter will be greatly appreciated.
