Help - big problem with mod_layout

OS: Solaris 9 on Sun platform
Apache: 1.3.31
mod_layout 3.2.1 as DSO

The installation was successful.  Apache server-info shows:
Server Version: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_layout/3.2.1 mod_fastcgi/2.4.2
FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/4.3.8 mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.7d

and 
Module Name: mod_layout.c
Content handlers: layout
Configuration Phase Participation: Child Init, Create Directory Config,
Merge Directory Configs
Request Phase Participation: Fixups
Module Directives:
    Layout - 
....


However, testing with a simple directive:
LayoutFooter "Copyright Foobar, 2004"

in the global context caused the entire server to crap out and spitting out
these messages in the error logs:
[Fri Oct 22 13:11:27 2004] [notice] child pid 5323 exit signal Segmentation
Fault (11)
[Fri Oct 22 13:11:40 2004] [notice] child pid 5324 exit signal Segmentation
Fault (11)
[Fri Oct 22 13:12:09 2004] [notice] child pid 5325 exit signal Segmentation
Fault (11)

Have any of you seen this before and can you give me a hint how to solve
this ?
