I'd just like to mention that the "AddHandler mp3-file *.mp3" thingy IS THE
MOST UNDER-RATED FEATURE IN MOD_MP3. Sorry for the shouting, but its
true.... And sad because nobody uses it. If you want to get mod_mp3 working
quickly, without any fuss, do it this way. You can think of this feature as
turning mp3's into images. You know how apache knows how to send images to
the web browser, seeing the .gif file ext, and sending the correct
mime-type? Well the add-handler does the same, but for mp3's. Apache simply
knows that this file is an mp3 file (based on file extension), and
automatically builds a correct connection. This way you can just put the
mp3's in your web root, write an index page and have direct url's (no op=
stuff) to the mp3's. Nothing can be more elegant, and simple! The
configuration of apache is a one line change. In fact, since the add-handler
is so simple, you could even do it on a per user basis with the .htaccess
file.

This is how I use mod_mp3 at home for casual listening, I love it. If you
don't create an index page, apache can create one dynamically, and list the
contents in the "document-root" for you with its own icons and what not.

If anybody has any problems with this, typically means their browser has a
problem mapping the mime-type to the helper app. On Windows, just reinstall
winamp, it takes control of the audio file-types, and resets the Windows
mime-table. On Netscape, you have to mess with Netscape preferences.

Brian.

Thanks for the quick response!

In answer to your questions.

1. Yes, it works one way, but not the other. I'll
send you a private e-mail with the URL so you can see
it for yourself.

2. With the AddHandler added to http.conf, the file
still is treated like a regular audio file, the player
does begin to play it, but not streamed, it's
downloading in the background as it plays.

3. Don't worry about this one. The more I thought
about it, I think Ensim actually wraps the processes
with some kind of bandwidth monitoring whatsit, so I'm
pretty confident that the output from mod_mp3 will be
treated just like regular Apache http output.
