Yes, my script creates and extracts the archive, of course with the same
version of star: 1.5a67.

I just tried the script with ext2 filesystems: Same problem.  But I can
try with additional file systems in case you cannot reproduce the
problem on your system.

I may try compilation with the Intel compiler.

Uhm, doesn't the script that I provided in my previous email match your
definition of a small test case?  If you don't have "bash" installed, I
can of course provide a version ported to a different type of shell,
just tell me which one you like.
