Alternatives to [LR]-click would be using Shift,Ctl,Alt,...
This could be configurable, like (almost) everything else is.
Any such configuration is clearly a *user* preference, so it
should not be part of the session state.
Another approach again would be to make the exclusive-or-not
selection more easily accessible. It sort of annoying that
you need to go through several levels of menus/tabs to change
it.
