And what happend?

The session-setup window you are looking at is the 1st
window ardour is showing up when started. It shows your
recent sessions (which is none in your case) or let you
start a new session by clicking at this option on top of
the window. So something should have happend.

To resize the window in mate i think you can right-click on
the session-setup button on the taskbar and choose something
like 'resize'.
