Is the limitation constant or does it change depending on something 
else? I mean, there are programs whose buffer size for a custom filter 
is hard-coded and there's no way you could alter it.

Really? I can imagine how I would do a FIR filter for such a thing but I 
have no idea how I would get a decent approximation using an IIR filter. 
Can you elaborate?

Also, a proper HT would definitely be useful too, the only difference 
being that the two amplitude-modulated signals would be subtracted, not 
added. So yes, it could be done with a proper HT as well.

That's what I'm saying, if it turns out that I can do it in Nyquist, I'm 
all my ears then.
