Thank you both. It transpires that the issue was ownership of some directories in my /home directory. Both ~/.gnome2/ and ~/.gnome2_private, but others too. Somehow this resulted from a fresh install and being something of a novice it didn't occur to me that there would be some directories that weren't owned by me which would result and furthermore that given that they did result that they ought to be owned by me. Anyhow, I fixed the problem with sudo chown -R me:me /home/me Now when I click on Audacity it opens as it always used to.
