The combined socket is not good at serving separated plugs. Try checking if your computer have a separated socket. What do you mean by “If the mic wasn’t attached to a headset”? You mean an external microphone? Something is just an audio card. There is one more layer by Audio Card, no matter internal, PCI-E or USB. It is the Audio Card who controls detection of a microphone and tell Audacity how many devices there are. I haven’t seen a mordern motherboard without a internal audio card.
