Wav File Bit Depth Conversion Problem

Hello,

I have some wav files that were produced with 24 bit format. I want to use
Audacity to convert them to 16 bit PCM format.

I've imported the file and it says 24 bit PCM
I've exported to a new file using the 16 bit wav output option
I now import the new file and it still says 24 bit PCM

Any idea what is going on?
