NO SOUND

When I use Audacity I see three choices for Mictophone
Microsoft Sound Mapper
Realtek
3-USB ...
1 and 3 give no sound
2 gives sound but is very distorted. In the past I've seen 6-USB and 
behaviour was proper. What do 3 and 6 mean here and how do I get back to 6?
