You're not the only one. I can't figure it out. I have two audio sources 
available on this Win10 laptop, the built-in Realtec sound card, and a 
USB Behringer UCA202 interface. I can record off of both of those in 
Audacity, but both of those record way too hot, resulting in a distorted 
recording. I don't know how to mitigate that, no matter which audio host 
I select. "Black art" indeed. I haven't had this much trouble with audio 
since the Windows 95 days.

On the other hand, I also use Cockos REAPER on the same machine, and it 
records from the Behringer interface just fine. The difference may be 
that it can use the ASIO4ALL driver for the Behringer. The upshot is 
that I can edit with Audacity on this laptop, but I can't record.

I had a Windows 7 and a Linux computer on which Audacity worked well 
enough. If there is some combination of settings that works on Windows 
10, I haven't found it yet. This is one reason I still maintain Windows 
7 on my audio recording machine.
