I think this will work for you. I always have my main vocal [my voice] set
to hit about MAX about 20% to 25% of the time. I never record on a level
where there are NO peaks.

Then, I will mix in music and/or other sound effects. I will at the end
[final edit] do either of the following:

*OPTION A* ~ NORMALIZE all levels (voice, music, effects, etc.) so they are
on [or near] the SAME LEVELS.

*OPTION B* ~ If "Normalizing" does NOT work, then SET EACH SECTION
[VOICE,MUSIC, EFFECTS]  SEPARATELY so that they are all about the same
level, with 20% to 25% of peaks touching MAX (top line).

I trust this will help you ... try it out and experiment.
