Simple rule, keep all signals as big as possible and adjust amplitude in
your final mix to your requirements. The vocal is originally in analogue
format and signal to noise ratios need to be high to avoid loss of A/D
resolution and noise floor levels affecting your quality.   The type look
you ask for is not important ... just aim for the highest peaks to be near
clipping only (maximum) at all stages and you're good.
