I'm not sure what the total possibilities are. I have an SL5500 with CF 
wifi
and it has an SD card as well. There might be possibilities with the CF
slot as there are a whole bunch of different cards available. The cradle
has a USB connection to the host computer but you could bypass the 
cradle
by getting the pin assignments from the developer site and making a 
cable.
On that bottom edge of the case there's also a separate battery charge
female jack to charge without the cradle. Battery life on the 5500 
isn't all
that wonderful so you'd probably need it.

I don't see why there would be a problem with MIDI i/o (I haven't tried 
it),
particularly if the zaurus was booted into console mode. There do seem
to be some latency issues with the standard GUI running. I'm not sure if
running the debian kernel improves that situation.
