My understanding is that the Zero has no built-in
networking whatsoever and requires soldering to use
the HiFiBerry products. So even though that $5
price seems incredibly attractive, it may not be
worth the trouble.

Logitech Media Server completely changed the way I
listen to music. In a good way, of course!

I should also point out that a Pi can run the
server as well as act as a player. So you can have
a Pi located in one listening area that both serves
and plays plus one or more others in different
rooms that only play. I have 90,000+ tracks, so I
keep my music on multiple NASes, but if you have a
more sane library you can directly attach a USB
drive.

I've used the HiFiBerry Digi+ and found it solid
enough to work with DTS and AC-3. That's my quick
and dirty check for whether it's bit-perfect. As
of yesterday I'm also using a DAC+ Pro (RCA
outputs) to feed to a quad decoder that only has
analog inputs. I'm very happy with both and
they're very happy with just about anything you
throw at them up to 192k.
