Sounds to me like a failing drive. My experience is that I rarely get
more than a few years life from an optical disc drives. Eventually they
start getting flakey, and maybe the most common flake is that they stop
recognizing various discs. Sometimes brands of discs, sometimes types
(+R vs -R) etc. The drives are cheap, so I just replace them.
