You could try installing ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/ - free & great) and see if it can recognize and write to your drive. This could be a good way to determine if the problem is with your drive or with EAC.

I have tried your suggestions: here's what happened...
Mark, yes I was using CDRDAO for encoding, so I turned it off and tried that, but am still getting the same failure to recognise blank discs.
Oh, and yes, the "IT Tech" is apparently on trial. Not sure about their long term prospects!
Federico, in EAC Options/interface, I see three options to choose from listed under Use of SCSI interface. They are:-
* Installed external ASPI interface - this is greyed out and cannot be selected
* Installed external ASPI interface (from VOB software) - this is also greyed out
* Native WIN32 interface for XP/Vista/Win7 - this is selected by default as the other options are unavailable
So sadly, I can't e ven try your suggestion.
Here is some more detail on how it behaves in general...
* Insert a commercially produced CD and all tracks appear normally, listed with track names, artist info and track length. At the bottom left of the main EAC window, the message "Audio CD in drive" appears.
* I can then successfully read, convert, backup and save to .wav and .flac, create cue sheets, detect pre-track gaps and all the rest.
* Insert and blank CD-R disc and the message "No audio CD in drive" just continues to display.
* Go to Tools/Write CD-R, the CD Layout Editor appears, loads cue sheets normally. Go to CD-R/Write CD... and the error message "There is no writable CD in drive !" appears.
I'm scratching my head at this point.
EAC is running in administrator mode, so permissions should all be fine. It's just failing to see any blan k discs going in. I've been using EAC this way for years, I haven't even changed my brand of discs.
I did another uninstall and reinstall as one last roll of the dice, but I'm just stuck at this point.
Hope that all makes sense, at least to somebody else ;-)
