Often the problem is bad *writes*, since almost no one bothers to verify
the correct burning of audio discs. It's awfully easy to mismatch media,
drive, and burning speed, resulting in errors that might be correctable
or "concealable" during normal playback, but that will almost always be
extracted during a rip.
You can find a similar problem with some of the variations on anti-copy
algorithms used in commercial CDs.
And, by the way, there is one way to share rips of commercial CDs that
isn't piracy: if the person with whom you share has purchased the same
CD you have, but is either lazy or incompetent at ripping, doing the
work for both of you is pretty much the same as forcing each of you to
do it.
