The problem is that what’s acceptable to me today might not be the same as a year from now when I realize that the tick sound I heard wasn’t a heater cooling down, as I had assumed at the time, but is actually an error on the rip.

Sounds like a good plan. I’ve got my music on a hard drive on my iMac Pro as well as on a QNAP 8 x 3TB RAID 5 NAS, all on UPSs, of course (he writes, as the thunder booms outside and the rain pours down).
I’ve got a Volumio (www.volumio.org <http://www.volumio.org/>) server upstairs that I’ve configured to get music off of my QNAP NAS. It feeds an Emotiva Stealth DC-1 DAC which is directly connected to my Adcom GFA-555 amplifier. My speakers are VMPS Super Tower/Rs. When I’m at my computer, I typically listen with Sennheiser HD580 headphones fed by an O2 Headphone Amplifier. I’m driving that right off of the analog output from my iMac Pro, which is, to be honest, incredibly good.
