There's no excuse, but some do.

The players in fancy new Acuras simply go silent at compression level 8,
at least with multichannel material. I don't know what the highest level
they'll accept is, as the person having the problem simply went all the
way down to 0, found that it worked, and never tested further.

Years ago, the Logitech Squeezebox Touch had issues with high-resolution
material above level 5, though that was quickly fixed via a firmware update..
