Slow ripping

I have a brand new Dell PC and I"ve installed EAC on it. And it is abit
disappointing -- I'm pretty sure that the CD drive can do at least 16x [if not 32x]
but as I type this EAC is lumbering along at 3.5x. Why so slow? Can it be
brought up to a faster speed?
