Fred, take a look at
https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yahoo-group-archiver
It requires a version of python, which is available free of charge for
pretty much all OSes, and it looks like it would do what you want. mbox
format is usable directly by a great many mail programs, or could simply be
searched (it's a text mail file format). It's also probably importable into
archives used by other online "group" systems.
