I played around a bit more with PG Offline and I got it to work... until 
I reached the trial version limit of 1000 messages. That's all you get 
until you pay the $25 license fee.

Also, it appears that it doesn't download the entire original message - 
it gets the message body, but skips the header. That loses some 
information that might be valuable in another database program.

I'm now checking out the yahoo-group-archiver Python script that Mark 
Fishman mentioned. Haven't got it to work yet, but I'll keep hammering 
at it.
