As far as a general recommendation, go for a full-size drive in an AC-powered enclosure. The little USB-powered, laptop, optical drives are very convenient on trips, but they are usually significantly slower than the full-size (technically 1/2 height 5.25” form factor) drives in all respects (spin-up time, CD audio ripping speed, DVD/CD-ROM reading/writing speed, etc.). I think that the full-size drives tend to have a longer lifespan, too.
I’m using an old TSSTcorp (Samsung) SH-S162L DVD+/-RW IDE Lightscribe drive in an ADS Technologies USB 2.0 enclosure and I’m very happy with it, but it's long out of production.
