Several years ago I made a test CD of mixed emphasized/non-emphasized
tracks and assorted correct and incorrect flags to check my various
setups and found that they were all doing what they were supposed to do.
I keep reading rumors that modern equipment will no longer de-emphasize,
but I haven't found that to be the case, even in my car where it
probably doesn't matter as much.

Weirdest empahsis thing I've ever seen is when using a Wandboard as a
Squeezebox player. When booted, it always flags the S/PDIF stream to
tell the DAC to de-emphasise. If you don't remember to run the command
to turn that off, you get dull sound. A friend has a Pioneer (I think)
receiver that even respected the de-emphasis flag in a DTS stream, so it
would properly decode the surround, then dull the highs. Took us forever
to figure out what was going on…pre-emphasis was a sudden “shower
thought” that I was able to test because I've got a copy of the original
US CD of Pink Floyd's The Wall that I keep in both its original
pre-emphasized and SoX de-emphasized versions.

Brothers in Arms? That one is often cited as probably having that problem.

I'm not sure that my ear is good enough to be confident of that!

There's a Marc Almond album from *2011* that's pre-emphasized while the
related single is not. And the flag is definitely correct—if you rip
both the single and the album it's from and compare the common track
without correcting the pre-emphasis, the difference is immediately
obvious. No idea what possessed someone to do that so late in the game!

Some file playback setups will deal with that via tags, but I'm a
Squeezebox person and that one won't.

True, but if you're just playing files anyway I don't think it matters
much. For what it's worth, I find that SoX does the de-emphasis well,
though by doing it in the digital domain it's technically out of spec, I
suppose.
