thanks! Patches applied with one minor change (s/int/size_t/ to avoid
a compiler warning).

Wow, you are making big changes! :)

But indeed, you are right, about time to do this change, patch applied to 
git master.

I also did another big-ish looking (but probably no impact) change and 
changed Ecasound's Single-UNIX-Spec preference from SUSv2 to SUSv3 
(-D_XOPEN_SOURCE=600 now). SUSv3 is anyways what Ecasound needs (monotonic 
clock), and it's 10 years since the spec was published, so should be safe 
to make the change finally now.

Still hoping 2.9.1 to be a very modest and low-risk update.
