The one caveat that I find expensive, quality, high-end gear really affords
is time. I basically agree with you. I can get great sounds with a tin can
and a piece of string... but it takes a lot longer and your options are
limited. With a great signal chain and a great instrument, I find that I
usually get a great sound sticking the mic in front of the instrument with
minimal fuss. It lets me concentrate on other stuff. 

...and say, mightn't it be time for this (perfectly interesting) thread
maybe moved over to the OT list?
