It depends.

I had problems using anything over 5 metres unless you put a powered  
hub or something in the chain.
I did have a studio with a machine room for a long while though- with  
a good powered KVM I was able to get the cable run as long as 20 metres.

There is probably some standard info- maybe check with MOTU and see  
what they reckon.
