Generally (as you already say) this is true but not in this case. The  
exception is that the current Mac Pro line has not changed since the  
introduction of Snow Leopard. So before Snow Leopard, the exact same  
models came with Leopard (some still do, it's not even sure my new Mac  
will have SL preinstalled, although it's probable). The thing is that  
you need a fairly recent Leopard installer, preferably one that came  
with a Mac Pro (the generic 10.5.1 installer I have won't work, my  
dealer tells me)

So in my case it will be a question of seeing whether or not Snow  
Leopard is already installed and, if it is, downgrading by doing a  
clean install from a borrowed Leopard disc.

In general, what I've learned is that you should be able to downgrade  
a current Mac Pro to Leopard as long as you have the right installer  
discs. Which is a good thing because otherwise you effectively  
wouldn't be able to buy a new Mac Pro / PT HD system today...

combinations on this machine and particularly the current state of  
Native Instruments / PT compatibility
