I think Todd presents a wonderful topic (though it comes out of a
frustrating inability to get something to work - I've been there, over
& over), and out of it several great ideas & experiences of what the
best interface is for people is being shared.
For those having the same problem Todd (the original poster, by the
way) had, he seems to have had success in getting what he needs
working to work, though I'm not sure if it was getting his M-Audio to
work with Logic 8, or getting a different Interface thet works for him
(I'm guessing, from a few things he'd added in an explanation of how
things are working for him now, it was getting the M-Audio to work
with Logic 8).
I actually have a PreSonus FireBox Interface, and love it very much,
and I also have an M-Audio, and they both work with my Logic 9. The
PreSonus I had back when I had Logic 7, and it's worked that, and
through Logic 8 & 9. M-Audio I got after upgrading to Logic 9, so I
don't really know how it works with Logic 8 or below.
What may have made a difference for Todd was going to the "Audio MIDI
Setup" application thet comes with Logic (9, 8, 7, & probably the
earlier ones, as well).
If you don't know about the "Audio MIDI Setup" application, you ought
to, and you should be able to always find it in your "Applications"
folder, in the "Utilities" folder.
Once you open it (if you haven't already), you'll see how many options
for setting up your MIDI devices and Audio devices there are. So not
only do you have options for setting up external devices in the
"Preferences" & "Settings" options in Logic, and in your Mac "System
Preferences" area, but also the "Audio MIDI Setup" application.
Oh, and once you open the "Audio MIDI Setup" application, pressing the
"Scan MIDI" option helps alot to find what's compatible with Logic (if
you have it all connected right, mind you), and then pressing the
"Test Setup" option helps.
I'm hoping Todd'll share, what worked for him, and hope he & everyone
else gets past whatever is stopping them in moving forward - always.
Enjoy.
