Well, for a start, you could ask for the size to be half (960x540) or even quarter (480x270) of the original, or somewhere between (720x405). This should be good enough for you to work with in Logic in order to see what's going on (though you won't see every hair on peoples' heads...). It will reduce the file size accordingly and possibly reduce the load as well.

DV-PAL with a much smaller bit rate (around 30k) would be fine.
