I usually follow this rule because as George pointed out, some plugs will clip. Most of my mixing style is to send channels to 'busses' (Drum Bus, Key Bus, Guitar Bus...etc.), and if I pound the input of my group bus, I hear the clipping, especially with certain plugins.
