..if you are listening on the best speakers that will ever be used to play your music, and your hearing is absolutely optimal at the time of listening and better than everybody else's who will ever hear the product.

The zeroth rule has some amendments :P That's the whole reason these other 'rules' exist.

Indeed in the case of floating point mixing there's no technical reason to worry about intermediate levels, but it's a very good general rule to prevent any signal going over 0dB anywhere in your mix - not because it would clip, but to have a 'mental' limit for yourself to keep your mix in control. That of course is something different than always having the master fader higher than any other fader, I guess that rule has its basis in integer mixing history.
