I disagree. I think it's a great rule to put in your head. For someone who is just starting out in this day of floating point DAWs it can reinforce habits that can be a serious bite in the butt if they ever start mixing on non-floating point rigs or, good heavens, an analog rig! There are reasons to do it this way and no reason not to, except convenience of the moment. Gain structure is one of the key supreme concepts of mixing and if a beginning mixer can get in their head how the signal is at its optimum all the way through the path, then they will have a skill that will serve them well regardless of the rig they are on. If they get in the mindset of the letting the faders be anywhere they want and just fixing it at the master, then they can get into some seriously sloppy thinking. A non
 -floating point plug-in can then wreak havoc resulting in distortion they may not be able to find or they can find themselves in a different studio after growing to think they are a badass and look really foolish. 

I think a sloppy mind is a terrible thing to cultivate. I am very thankful to Greg McCleary of Heartpunch Studios in Brookline MA for instilling in me a sense of precision when I was just starting out.
