foot pedal controller for recording/playback

Has anyone used something like this? http://www.nch.com.au/hardware/pedals.html

I've found several other similar pedals, but they all seem to be related directly to dictation creation/playback software, but I don't see any reason they wouldn't work with Logic or whatever recording/sampling software (at least on a Mac with no drivers required).  Anyone tried this concept, have a better recommendation?  They aren't exactly cheap...  TIA!
