I used to have several of these Sony effectors,

After replacing the battery, your user presets will still be trashed, 
and simply selecting a user preset will crash the unit.

IIRC, the reset procedure is to hold the Bypass and exit buttons 
while powering the unit up.

That should clear all user presets and settings (Like the display 
contrast) to factory defaults
