I'm fairly sure you should be using a cross-over serial cable. The reason is
serial ports typically have one pin dedicated to transmitting data (TX) and
another for receiving data (RX). If you use a straight cable, you're
connecting TX to TX and RX to RX which plainly won't work! That's why
cross-over cables are made - the two data connections are swapped at one end
so that TX sees RX and vice versa. Some serial devices (e.g. printers) are
manufactured with this potential polarity problem in mind and wire their
ports accordingly i.e. the 'wrong way round'. In those cases a straight
cable must be used, but I doubt the AMT8 is one of these. IIRC, a pre-made
straight serial cable has two arrows side by side pointing in opposite
directions on the plug shells, whereas a crossover cable has no such
legending.

You should be able to get a good quality pre-made cross-over cable at any
computer store.
